Beat Power Outages & Stay Connected

Your Guide to Conquering Power Outages

Tulum's tropical paradise boasts sunshine and stunning beaches, but even paradise can experience the occasional blip.

While power outages are not a frequent occurrence, they can happen whether announced or completely unexpected, disrupting your digital flow. This guide equips you, our fellow digital nomad, to navigate a Tulum blackout with grace and keep your workflow flowing.

What to Expect

While uncommon, Tulum's power outages can last from a few minutes or up to a few hours. The good news: they often hit by neighborhood, so connectivity options might be closer than you think! Join our FREE WhatsApp group (before it fills up!) for real-time updates and coworking meet-up locations during outages.

Scheduled Power outages - communication around scheduled power outages are getting better, with notifications coming from CFE, condominiums or the communities sharing that information in advance that get shared in groups. So you can prepare for your next day's work schedule, calls, and stay on course with your daily goals.

Remember, in Tulum, losing power often means losing access to running water as well. This can significantly impact basic tasks like showering and brushing your teeth. Be a prep pro! Taking a quick shower and brushing your teeth before bed becomes even more important on nights leading up to a potential outage the following day.

Pre-Power Down Prep: Be Charged-Up

  • Portable Powerhouse: A lifesaver! Pack a high-capacity power bank to keep your devices juiced for up to 6 hours. In fact, get two - so you can use (1) for your work device and (2) for your modem or router

  • Nighttime Charge Up: Fully charged device like phones, laptops, headphones etc to ensure a smooth workflow. This will ensure you get sufficient power throughout the work day.

  • Explore WiFi Backup Options: Consider mobile WiFi hotspots like Skyroam or Starlink for ultimate peace of mind.

Power Up and continue to work: Hotels with Backup Generators and Wifi

Some hotels and restaurants in Tulum have generators. These generators kick in when the power goes off to keep the lights and Wi-Fi on!

Power outages can turn into fun work days where you make new friends and get even more ideas for your projects. Some locations you can work from:

  • Hilton Motto Tulum

  • Aloft Tulum Centro

  • Habitas Tulum on the Beach

Do you know any other places with Generators? Respond and we'll add it to the list!

Embrace the Adventure!

Power outages can be a chance to disconnect and reconnect with your surroundings:

  • Unplug and Recharge: Enjoy the forced disconnect – head to the beach with a good read! Pack a journal, bathing suit and enjoy the sound of the waves for a relaxing day / evening.

  • Candlelit Delights: In the evening restaurants with outdoor seating create a magical ambiance with candles.
